About James Island, Saanichton

Located just twenty minutes by boat from the town of Sidney, James Island is home to the provincially-significant coastal sand ecosystem, which provides critical habitat for a number of rare and endangered species. The dynamic sand spit and dune ecosystem provides habitat for Yellow sand verbena, which is the exclusive host to the endangered sand verbena moth. The plants and wildlife of James Island rely on the dynamic processes of sand movement to create the unique conditions in which they can thrive.

What you will be doing

Volunteers will remove invasive gorse and scotch broom, which crowd out yellow sand verbena and other rarities such as contorted-pod evening primrose and Edward’s beach moth.

Why you will love it

Volunteering is one of the few ways to see this beautiful island, which is normally closed to the public to protect sensitive ecosystems. Enjoy amazing coastal views on the boat ride over, and maybe even spot porpoises, bald eagles or buffleheads.
