Beat the Buckthorn

Event Details

September 19th, 2019, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Creelman and Salkeld (Portland), Ontario
Habitat Restoration

We need your help removing a rather threatening thorn in our sides, the invasive buckthorn! These small shrubs/trees have found their way into the forests of our Creelman and Salkeld properties, threatening the local vegetation’s security and stability. Together, we can uproot these wide-spreading, highly aggressive plants and ensure native species continue to thrive in their natural environment.

About Creelman and Salkeld (Portland)

This 20 hectare (50 ac.) property is based just north of Portland, within the Cooligan Marshes Provincially Significant Wetland (PSW) complex, which contains important nesting and feeding habitat for waterfowl. Made up of a mix of sugar maple/red oak forests and sprawling wetlands, the area provides habitat for at-risk species like the snapping turtle, western chorus frog, eastern ribbon snake and wood thrush. Endangered species, such as the monarch butterfly and butternut tree, have also been noted on the property.

What you will be doing

You'll be bending and kneeling to hand-pull small buckthorn stems. There will be a short 300m hike from the parking area to the event site on a rugged forest trail. Be prepared for various inclined gradients and moderately uneven terrain.

Why you will love it

Enjoy some fresh air and friendly faces while learning more about invasive species through some hands on weed management! By removing buckthorn, you'll help ensure that the area's native plants and wildlife remain undisturbed in their natural habitat.
