About Lathrop Property

The Lathrop property is situated within one of the largest forested tracts in the Niagara Peninsula section of the Escarpment. Forest cover on the property protects the headwaters of Twelve Mile Creek, which supports the last remaining brook trout population in the Niagara Region.  The forest cover also continues almost unbroken to Short Hills Provincial Park to the north. The property supports several species considered rare in Ontario and Canada, including butternut and American chestnut.

What you will be doing

During this event, you’ll contribute to conservation efforts by removing European buckthorn, Japanese barberry and non-native honeysuckles. These shrubs out-compete native species, occupying much of the under storey.

Why you will love it

Removing these shrubs will make space for native plants, and ensure there is lots of food for all the wildlife!
