Habitat Restoration
Step back in time – come out and select a spruce tree to chop down and take home as your Christmas tree! Previous landowners planted spruce trees on the property, however they do not grow naturally in this area.
Coniferous trees do not typically occur in the Aspen Parkland ecoregion and their presence may negatively affect the habitat for the plants and animals calling this area home. Spruce trees may alter the soil chemistry when they shed their needles making the soil more acidic, which is inhospitable to many plants. Spruce trees also provide refuge or corridors for animals that may not otherwise occur in the area. Altering the species composition of animals on the landscape may be favorable for some but unfavorable for others. Removing the spruce trees will help return ecological integrity the Messier property and restore it to its former glory.
Once you’ve chopped your tree down, enjoy some hot chocolate and chat with NCC staff.
Please email the event contact to join the waiting list.
More Information
The Messier Property has three permanent wetlands and 10 seasonal and temporary wetlands scattered throughout the property totaling 25 acres. Eighty acres is in native grass, 80 acres is native aspen tree cover and the remaining 135 acres is seeded to tame forage. The natural grassland and bush have not been grazed in at least 20 years. This site provides habitat for white-tailed and mule deer, ruffed and sharp-tailed grouse and coyote as well as nesting and migratory passerine birds and waterfowl.
What you will be doingSelecting a spruce tree, chopping it down, taking it back to your vehicle (setting up and decorating the tree happens later).

Please note that although spruce trees may be abundant on the property, they are finite - so make sure you come early to get the best selection.
NCC has a couple of saws but not enough for everyone. If you have a saw capable of cutting down a small to medium sized tree, please bring it.
Additional information will be sent to you once you register. The event will proceed 'snow or shine'; however, if the event cannot run for any reason, NCC staff will contact you.
