Inventories and Monitoring
Be a citizen scientist for a day! We need your help identifying species on a prospective nature reserve just outside St. John’s at Freshwater Bay. Whether you’re a bird buff, plant pro, or new naturalist, we’ll need all hands on deck to conduct a thorough inventory of the landscape!

This 243 acre (98 ha.) nature reserve is located between Blackhead and St. John’s, with the northeastern edge reaching a naturally-formed rocky barachois that divides Freshwater Bay Pond and Freshwater Bay. The property’s boreal forests, mixed wetlands and coastal shores provides a buffer to several seabird colonies, including the vulnerable black-legged kittiwake.
NCC acquired Freshwater Bay with the assistance of the Government of Canada’s Natural Areas Conservation Program (NACP), a unique public-private partnership to accelerate the pace of land conservation across southern Canada. What you will be doing
We'll be organizing into small groups to identify the plants and birds throughout different sections of the property. More experienced naturalists will be paired with those who are working on developing their identification skills. Why you will love it
Surrounded by avid naturalists, this is the perfect opportunity to learn more about conservation planning and its impact on local wildlife! The Botanical Arts Society will also be sharing information on botanical arts and offering hands-on pointers on how to get started!Questions?
