About Milburn Creek Property (Battersea)

This spectacular 91 hectare (224 ac.) property is located 20 km north of Kingston, just outside Battersea. Situated between the Frontenac Arch’s granite foundation and the limestone plains of Eastern Lake Ontario, the area’s unique geography creates a mosaic of mixed forest, wetland and riparian habitats. American beech, sugar maple and the endangered butternut form its diverse woodland canopy, while the forest floor below is speckled with ferns and orchids. Following the meandering Milburn Creek for over 2 km, the property’s marshlands support at-risk species such as Blanding’s turtle, western chorus frog and snapping turtle.

What you will be doing

You will help NCC staff to combat this widely spreading, invasive shrub by hand pulling small buckthorn stems. This will involve bending and pulling motions, as well as a short 1 km hike from the parking area to the event site. The hike will mostly be on a well-defined trail, but volunteers may encounter slightly inclined gradients, and moderately uneven terrain.

Why you will love it

By hand-pulling buckthorn, you can help ensure that the beautiful native plants and birds continue to flourish in the forest of the Milburn Creek Property. You’ll love spending the day on this beautiful property, connecting with nature and other volunteers.
