More Information
Matson Conservation Area contains the last patch of Garry oak ecosystem in Victoria’s Inner Harbour. Located in Esquimalt, Matson Conservation Area is a natural gem in the heart of the city, where purple martin swallows, Cooper’s hawks and a rare white variety of great camas find home. The Nature Conservancy of Canada holds a conservation covenant on this property, which is owned by Habitat Acquisition Trust.
What you will be doingVolunteers will remove invasive plants like English Ivy and Scotch Broom, which crowd the camas and other important native plants.
Why you will love itThis is a great place for Victoria residents to get their hands dirty! Along with restoring the camas meadows, volunteers will learn about the effects of ecosystem fragmentation, urbanization, and climate change in this endangered habitat.
