Habitat Restoration

Join NCC and the Castle-Crown Wilderness Coalition (CCWC) on a stunning hike into Blind Canyon to tackle invasive weeds on this site which, while remote, is not immune to encroachment from invasive plants.

Please note, the event involves a one hour up-hill hike to access the site, so all participants must be physically prepared & equipped for a strenuous day of hiking. Pack horses will be used to assist in removal of the weeds.

If you’d like to carpool to the event, please click here, https://www.groupcarpool.com/t/t6a748 to add your car or join a ride going to the event. There is also a wait list feature if there isn’t a ride there yet that works for you. Happy carpooling!

About Blind Canyon (Twin Butte)

Based along the rocky mountains, just 12.5 km southwest of Twin Butte, lies the scenic Blind Canyon. This 65 hectare (160 ac.) area features two flowing creeks, a homestead from the 1920s and forms part of a wildlife corridor for species like grizzly bears, bighorn sheep and wolverine. Additionally, 9 rare species have been found in the area, including the endangered limber pine.

Originally under the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation of Canada, Blind Canyon was eventually acquired by NCC, Alberta Conservation Association, and Alberta Fish and Game Association when the foundation closed its Canadian operations in 2009.

What you will be doing

In partnership with the Castle Crown Wilderness Coalition, we will be tackling our first volunteer-powered weed pull at an old farm site in the front ranges of Blind Canyon. We'll be targeting several restricted and noxious weeds, including burdock.

Why you will love it

Enjoy a stunning hike into Blind Canyon led by local guide, Wendy Ryan. Take in the beautiful scenery and learn about both the natural and human history of the area.
