Howe Bay (Cardigan), PEI
Infrastructure / Site Cleanup
This event is for the birds – literally! If you love our little feathered friends as much as NCC, join us in building nesting boxes! These wooden boxes are perfect for providing homes to cavity-nesting birds like owls and woodpeckers, as well as cavity-nesting mammals like flying squirrels.
Please email the event contact to join the waiting list.
More Information
Only 20 km northwest of Cardigan, the Howe Bay properties are a mix of 31 acres (12.5 ha.) of aspen and spruce old growth forests, agricultural fields and wetlands. Aspen trees, which remain standing and go soft when they die, attract woodpeckers to carve into and use as their home, attracting species like northern flying squirrels, black-capped chickadees and red-breasted nuthatches once the woodpeckers leave their tree.
What you will be doingVolunteers will be given a demonstration on how to build wooden nesting boxes, and then will be set to work! Wood will already be cut to size and volunteers will need to assemble the boxes. Staff will be there to supervise and help as needed. The materials and space is being donated to NCC by Birdmouse, a grassroots company in Cardigan, PEI.
Why you will love itThis is very hands on work. The nesting boxes our volunteers build will be installed throughout NCC's Howe Bay Nature Reserve at a later date. The nesting boxes will provide more habitat for the woodpeckers, owls, flying squirrels, and other cavity nesters who use the Howe Bay area. Volunteers are also encourage to use what they learn at the workshop to build nesting boxes for their own back yards!
