Plugs for the Prairies: Van Hove Part 1
May 30th, 2019, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
Van Hove Evens Property, Warkworth, Ontario
Help restore rare prairie habitat to the Rice Lake Plains! Historically, the Rice Lake Plains were covered with tall grass prairies and oak savannah, which were dominated by massive black and white oak, grasses like big bluestem and switchgrass thrived and a diverse range of wildflowers blossomed. Today, the oak savannah and tall grass prairie of the Rice Lake Plains are badly fragmented and overgrown with non-native species. Help give this globally rare habitat a comeback by planting native prairie species plugs on our Van Hove property.

The Rice Lake Plains are the found in the eastern-most segment of the Oak Ridges Moraine, south of Rice Lake. This area contains some of the largest examples of kame moraine forests, prairies and savannas in Ontario. Historically the Rice Lake Plains were dominated by prairie and savannah which covered at least 42,500 acres (17,200 ha). Black oak savannah and tallgrass prairie vegetation communities, which were once common in southern Ontario, have now been ranked as globally rare and are classified as critically endangered in many U.S. states. Less than 3% of the original extent of these habitats remains in Ontario, which is why their restoration is critical. What you will be doing
We will be planting native tall grass prairie species to help restore and expand the tall grass prairie cover in the Rice Lake Plains. We will walk approximately 0.2 km over flat terrain to reach the planting site. Planting will involve bending and using trowels to dig holes for the seedlings. Why you will love it
In addition to contributing to the restoration of Ontario’s rare tall grass prairie habitat, you will get to tour the property and experience all that the Rice Lake Plains Natural Area has to offer.Questions?
