About Lake Champlain

NCC possesses 381 hectares of land in the Tourbière de Venise-ouest sector in the Lake Champlain area. This ecosystem represents one of the last unspoiled black soil in the St. Lawrence Lowlands region. It is essential to the filtration and purification of the water of the Baie Missisquoi watershed as well as to the life cycle of many plant and animal species at risk.

What you will be doing

During this activity, we will try to limit the invasion of common buckthorn by pulling out as many plants, small and large, as possible, focusing on the most mature plants before they have a chance to release their fruits full of seeds. The buckthorn plants in the area are of varying sizes, and we will have a specialized tool available to uproot larger shrubs.

Why you will love it

This is an opportunity to participate in protecting an ecosystem that is increasingly rare in Quebec, a mature silver maple stand. This ecosystem is a habitat for two species of trees rarely seen in a natural environment: swamp white oak and hackberry. NCC biologists will be more than happy to teach you about the region’s plants and wildlife.

Please Note

The activity requires being in good enough physical condition to move around a flat topography without trails. There is a 600 m walk to reach the site, after which we will have to move around the terrain, which may be wet in certain places. Children over 7 years old who are interested in this activity are welcome, since buckthorn seedlings are easy to pull out. However, they must be accompanied by an adult. Please bring thick gloves or construction gloves. We have some to lend to participants who forget to bring them, if you have them.

Moderate fitness level required
No toilets on site
Carpooling can be arranged
