More Information
The Salmonier River area is NCC’s most recent project, and falls within a newly written conservation plan for the Avalon Peninsula. The forest has a high diversity of lichens, including the globally rare boreal felt lichen and blue felt lichen. The river itself is a provincially designated salmon river with a healthy population of Atlantic salmon. The area also neighbours the Avalon Wilderness Reserve, providing protection and resources for the species using that area.
What you will be doingVolunteers will be setting out with NCC after dusk to conduct a survey for owls that can be found on NCC’s Salmonier nature reserve.
Why you will love itThis is a great opportunity to get out in the woods, spend time with other birders, and share your knowledge and experience to help guide NCC's conservation efforts!
Questions?Contact Megan Lafferty: megan.lafferty@natureconservancy.ca
This event involves walking in the woods after dusk. Please come dressed for the weather, bring water and a headlamp/flashlight, and wear footwear in which you are comfortable walking long distances.
NCC will have the necessary survey materials available for participants, though volunteers are welcome to bring their own equipment if they prefer. Driving directions and parking information will be provided in the participant package and e-mail correspondence sent out prior to the event.
The event will not proceed if weather conditions are not suitable for surveying - participants will receive a phone call from NCC staff as early as possible. It is important to preregister online to ensure you receive event updates.
While we do our best to provide you with the tools you need to participate, please bring the following items if you have them:
- Layers of warm clothing
- Waterproof boots
- Headlamp/flashlight
