Hazel Bird Nature Reserve is a gem in the Nature Conservancy of Canada Rice Lake Plain’s properties. Unique animals and tallgrass prairie and oak savanna habitats are common. NCC needs your help in removing invasive Scotch pine from the property. You will assist in cutting small Scotch pine and help the native habitat thrive.

This 118 hectare (292 ac.) nature reserve is found within the Rice Lake Plains Natural Area, just 10 km southeast of Gores Landing. Made up of tall grass prairie, sand barren oak woodlands and black oak savannah, this diverse landscape provides invaluable habitat for species such as the spring peeper, Big brown myotis, eastern hog-nosed snake and the endangered monarch butterfly and red-headed woodpecker.What you will be doing

You’ll be directly helping the native plants and animals on this property by creating more natural space for them to thrive. You will also get to see beautiful examples of this unique ecosystem and the species that live there.Questions?

It’s great for protection from the sun, bugs, cold, rain, and dare we say it’s also great for looking fabulous in the field!
While we do our best to provide you with the tools you need to participate, please bring the following items if you have them:
- Close-toed footwear
- Long pants
- Long shirt
- Layers of clothing (light sweater and jacket)
- Sun hat
- 1 Litre of water in a reusable bottle
- Any necessary medications
