About Breckenridge (Gatineau)

This 297 hectare (735 ac.) project is located at the mouth of the Breckenridge Creek watershed on the eastern shore of the Ottawa River, about 20 km west of the city of Gatineau. The area includes significant natural habitats, including a large open marsh, the Breckenridge Creek, mixed forests, a portion of which lies in a flood zone, and more than 2 km of the Ottawa River’s banks. These diverse landscapes support species such as the loggerhead shrike, Blanding’s turtle, short-eared owl, western chorus frog and the endangered butternut tree.

What you will be doing

Main actions by the stewardship committee include the following: a) To act as NCC’s eyes and ears on the field by periodically visiting the properties to identify stewardship issues. b) Raise public awareness with regards to the protection of the territory, and encourage local involvement and participation of people interested in ecology and the conservation of species at risk. c) To transfer knowledge to the locals, and intervene with users who do not respect the restrictions in place. d) To clean up garbage. e) To accompany NCC or its delegates on the properties to monitor species at risk. f) To attend 1 or 2 meetings per year. The stewardship committee shall represent NCC as follows: a) To inquire of any person on the premises as to the purpose of his or her presence. b) To ask any person found on the premises intending to perform an act incompatible with NCC’s conservation mission to leave the territory. c) To communicate to the NCC any relevant observations of visit by the public and wildlife. d) To report promptly to the NCC of any incidents that could pose a threat to the integrity of the properties. e) This mandate does not authorize the stewards to act outside of NCC’s properties, to travel on motorized vehicules on the properties, to use the properties for personal use or for engaging in prohibited activities or to install any structure without prior written consent from the NCC.

Why you will love it

With its forest ecosystems, grasslands, shorelines and wetlands, the Breckenridge area presents a great interest for conservation. Access is not allowed to the public, except with written consent from NCC for stewardship or awareness-building activities.
