Tall Grass Prairie Monarch Survey 2

Event Details

August 22nd, 2016, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Manitoba Tall Grass Prairie Natural Area, Manitoba
Inventories and Monitoring

Be a citizen scientist for the day! Join NCC staff in conducting surveys for milkweed and Monarchs in Manitoba’s Tall Grass Prairie. This information will help us measure the effectiveness of our conservation work in providing suitable habitat for this species.  The data will also be submitted to the Mission Monarch project, a Canada-wide initiative to collect information about the distribution and status of the Monarch. Come out and learn all about this amazing butterfly and how to spot it in its various life stages.  For those interested, staff will also provide information about how you can contribute to this initiative on your own!

Carpooling: If you’re interested in carpooling with other volunteers (driving, or catching a ride) please click here https://www.groupcarpool.com/t/9hxrzb  and add your car, or join a car. There’s also a wait list feature if there’s no car listed yet where you’re traveling from. Happy travels!

About Manitoba Tall Grass Prairie Natural Area

The Tall Grass Prairie Natural Area supports a diversity of habitat types: wet and dry tall grass prairie, marshes and fens, savanna and woodlands, riparian areas and rivers. Thousands of species are known to use these habitats, including many that are listed on national or provincial endangered species lists, with less than one half of one percent of tall grass prairie remaining in North America, the Natural Area is a significant refuge for plants and animals that were once a common sight. Half of the global population of the endangered western prairie fringed orchid occurs here and this area is the only location in Canada where you can find the provincially endangered Poweshiek Skipperling.
