By signing up for this event, you can help improve habitat in one of the last remaining old-growth forests in Southern Ontario while getting a workout at the same time!

About Gillies Grove (Arnprior)

Nestled within the community of Arnprior, Gillies Grove is an excellent example of one of Ontario’s remaining old-growth forests, with some trees more than 65 cm in diameter and over 150 years old!

Old growth forests help with climate change adaptation by providing a refuge for migrating animals and plants as temperatures fluctuate. As well, forests are able to store significant amount of carbon in its soil and trees.

The area contains some of the province’s tallest white pine trees and supports species like the endangered butternut tree and special-concern eastern wood-pewee. Not only does the area provides important habitat for wildlife, but it’s open to the public for the community’s enjoyment!

What you will be doing

During this event, you’ll contribute to conservation efforts by removing Glossy False Buckthorn. These shrubs spread quickly to occupy much of the understory, pushing out native species.

Why you will love it

Not only will you escape the office and enjoy a day outside, you'll also be directly supporting local conservation by removing these shrubs and making space for native plants to thrive!
