About Cowichan Garry Oak Preserve (Duncan)

The Cowichan Garry Oak Preserve is the Nature Conservancy of Canada’s flagship property in the Cowichan Valley, located just 7.5 km northeast of Duncan. This 23 hectare (57 ac.) preserve is one the last, best examples of deep soil Garry oak ecosystem left in Canada. The meadow and woodland portion of the preserve features centuries-old Garry oak trees towering over grassy meadows full of native wildflowers, including the endangered upland yellow violet. Dozens of rare and at-risk species thrive here, including many types of bees and butterflies, delicate flowers and small woodland animals.

What you will be doing

Volunteers will lend a hand with a wide range of activities: pulling invasive species, working in the native plant nursery, planting seedlings and other stewardship tasks.

Why you will love it

On one of the longest days of the year, there's no better way to make the most of the daylight and give back to the earth! Experience one of the last and best examples of this globally rare ecosystem as you support the ongoing restoration efforts. Working among the groves of mossy Garry oaks is a great way to get out and appreciate the beautiful and intricate nature around us. Bring a friend!
